Fred Astle (Tainui) works in a shared leadership model with Visionwest’s CEO/Tumu Whakarae. As part of this role, Matua Fred oversees the whānau-facing support services provided by Visionwest. In his previous role as Head of Māori Development and Education, he led the Māori leadership team to support Kaupapa Māori development across Visionwest. 

Fred has extensive experience in Māori healthcare and education including work with government groups, The University of Auckland, Head of Healthcare Faculty for an Auckland-based international tertiary institution, Auckland District Health Board, Māori Mental Health, and Teacher Training. He is an Honorary Prof. Teacher Fellow in Surgery at The University of Auckland and is the Director of Kaupapa Māori for The University of Auckland, Surgical and Translational Research Centre, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.
